LETTER FROM THE SHERIFF

Hello, I am excited to present the following Transition Report to the community and the dedicated members of the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office.  This report is the culmination of months of work completed by the Transition Committee and others who supported these efforts in various ways. The Transition Committee comprises members of our agency and community, all of whom I trusted to be open and honest about the future of our agency and the challenges ahead of us.  This report establishes recommendations for improvement in our policies and practices.  It recognizes the need for formative changes in the justice system and the courageous stance the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office must take to ensure a transparent system free of inequality and inhumane treatment. This Transition Report is a living document. The needs of the communities we serve may change, and we may encounter unforeseen obstacles while implementing the recommendations contained within this report.  As a result, some of the proposed objectives and recommendations may require adjustment.  Nevertheless, I am committed to continuing earnest community engagement to evaluate our progress and direct our efforts if we fall short of our goals. For many years, the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office has worked to become a leader in community policing practices, enforcement, technology, and training advancements in the law enforcement profession.  I will continue those efforts through an equity lens that centers the needs of the communities we serve with bold and brave objectives. The work ahead of us will not be easy and will require every member of our agency and the communities we serve to be agents of change.  Our agency must work alongside our diverse communities and county partners to achieve our shared goals of achieving a crime-free county. I am hopeful about the future and our continued advancement. I promise to lead with compassion, dedication, and a commitment to doing what is right for our agency and the public. Sincerely,Yesenia L. Sanchez
